It’s a narrative we could all recite in our sleep by now: Canada is a champion of immigration and a model for other countries. Close to a quarter of Canada’s population was born somewhere else. Immigrants fuel the economy; they’re the future. All true—but then why is no one talking to us? That’s the question I’ve been asking myself for years, and what I think is a major shortcoming of Canadian media. But today I’m happy to say that we have a solution: it’s 3 magazine.
We named this new quarterly lifestyle magazine 3 to honour the third-culture experience that so many Canadians share. Having lived in three countries on three different continents before the age of seven, I’ve always felt a strong affiliation to the label “third-culture kid.” Born in the U.K. to Sri Lankan Tamil parents who later emigrated to Canada, I feel privileged to be a citizen of this country, and consider myself a proud Tamil-Canadian. Still, I’ve long felt the absence of a sophisticated, lively and engaging media platform designed to speak to “newcomers,” no matter when they arrived. It turns out that the SJC team was of the same mindset when we first met in 2023, just as I was starting to ask myself: How do you start a magazine, anyway?
A breed apart from traditional luxury lifestyle magazines by virtue of the demographic we aim to engage, 3 is ambitious. We hope to appeal to those who thrive on the complexity and richness of our interconnected world. Our mission is to meet readers at the intersection of business, media, tech, entertainment, sports and health. 3 likes to live well too, so in these pages you’ll also find style and design, travel, profiles and, of course, opinion.
In a world of polarizing politics and a divisive media landscape, 3 is more interested in focusing on what brings us together than tears us apart. As Rumi, one of my favourite poets, wrote, “If everything around seems dark, look again, you may be the light.”
For a long time, 3 was just an idea, nothing more than thin air and a conversation point, so it’s incredibly exciting to see a dream become a reality. Now that it is, please let us know your thoughts on this inaugural issue. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.
