Here’s What Reminds TIFF’s Anita Lee of Home

“When my family left Korea, we had to leave behind a piano my sister loved. So, my parents promised that wherever we went, they’d get another one. When we came to Toronto in 1974, my parents bought a used piano. But when our youngest brother went to McGill, my eldest brother and I packed up the last family home we’d all lived in together and we left it for the next owners. The piano just didn’t fit with the life we were living; it was some kind of dream that we were holding on to, until finally we just let go. But about 10 years ago, my neighbour knocked on my door out of the blue and offered us her piano. It looked similar to the one we’d given up, so I said yes. It gives me a real sense of our family journey and an idea of coming full circle. It represents what we left behind, the aspirations or dreams that my parents had, and where I am right now, with the space to welcome this piano back in my life.”
